Church of God Ministries staff count the change donated by Anderson University Dunn Hall residents given to support the Church of God’s Myanmar Disaster Relief Effort. Photo by Carolyn Frost. On Wednesday, May 7, an Anderson University Student walked into Church of God Ministries with a container full of loose change. He wanted to make a donation on behalf of his dormitory friends to the Church of God’s disaster relief effort to Myanmar. And he used a creative approach to raise $120 to give to this worthy cause.

The student went around his dorm Tuesday night collecting change that students had kept back for laundry. “I figured now that the school year is over, most people would have their moms doing their laundry, so they would not need the change anymore,” said the student, who asked that he not be identified but the gift credited to the residents of Dunn Hall.

“I was very surprised when the student handed me a container full of nickels, dimes, pennies, and quarters,” said Jael Tang, Global Missions administrative assistant at CGM. “When we counted the money and found the total gift was over $100, I was amazed. While some may consider the amount to be small, every gift counts. It means a lot that students who have little money would come up with such a creative way to make a contribution.”

Paul Maxfield, executive director of Children of Promise, has been in frequent telephone contact with the director of the Children of Promise program in Myanmar. The leaders there shared with Maxfield that food is in short supply and prices have skyrocketed due to high demand for staples. Water can only be obtained from private sources at high prices. They are still without electricity and are cooking in large groups so as to conserve fuel. Gasoline prices have hit $20 per gallon. Roads to outlying areas and churches continue to be impassable.

Three churches lost their roofs in the cyclone. The roofs of the buildings housing the church headquarters, office, Bible training school, and girls’ dorm were also destroyed. When asked how they were coping, one of the leaders replied, “Physically, we are surviving fine. Mentally and emotionally, we are hurting. It was so frightening.”

Please continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Myanmar. The past year has seen violence, upheaval, increased persecution, surging prices, and now, natural disaster. “Join us in becoming answers to the Burmese peoples’ cries for God’s intervention and help,” invited Maxfiled. “Donations are urgently needed for continued relief and rebuilding.”

Church of God Ministries, Children of Promise, and the Women of the Church of God are all working in collaborative partnership to respond to this crisis. Please consider joining with these AU students in making a contribution the disaster relief effort.
