AU Receives Grant for Online Gospel Trumpet

 Anderson University has received a federal grant that will enable it to complete a searchable electronic version of the first thirty years of the Gospel Trumpet (1881–1910). Dr. Janet Brewer, AU director of libraries, says that the university expects to make the digital Gospel Trumpet available at next year’s North American Convention.
The Gospel Trumpet was the first major periodical of the Church of God. God used it to reach thousands of people with the gospel message. These people then formed Church of God congregations around the world.
Awarded under the Library Services and Technology Act, the grant will allow AU’s Nicholson Library to partner with the Church of God Archives and Ball State University’s library (Muncie, Indiana) to convert the Gospel Trumpet to a searchable online database. The public will then be able to visit the AU Web site and search early volumes of Gospel Trumpet for a particular name, term, or phrase.
Dr. Brewer said the university scanned most of these volumes several years ago to make a digital version. “We were able to put the periodical on disc, but our software did not have good search capabilities,” she explained. “We can use some of that work in this new project, matching it with much better search technology.”
