Global Missions recently announced the appointment of new missionary apprentices, all of whom were commissioned at the 2008 North American Convention of the Church of God in June: Kay Watts to Côte d'Ivoire and Dave and Bonnie Baylor to Kenya. A major component of the missionary apprentice program is mentoring by experienced career missionaries.
Watts's first assignment will be to teach at IBAO (Institut Biblique de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, "West Africa Bible Institute) and with the theological education by extension program; she will also coordinate the development of the IBAO library in Yamoussoukro. She hopes to begin a year of formal French-language study in 2009.
Watts received a master of religious education degree from Anderson University School of Theology in 1980 and master in library science from the University of South Florida in 1988. She was ordained in 2007 at Orlando First Church of God, where she has served in children's ministry leadership for nearly fourteen years.
Watts grew up in a loving Christian home and was nurtured by the First Church of God congregation in Winchester, Kentucky, and an extended family that included several ministers. Educational missions is her calling and passion. She has always been drawn to focus on the education part of the Great Commission.
Her call to foreign missions was rekindled when Sherman and Kay Critser invited Watts to prayerfully consider joining them in Côte d'Ivoire. She spent October 2007 there cataloging and preparing books for the IBAO library, and she conducted a two-day Christian education seminar with Ivorian pastors and church leaders.
Baylors, along with their two sons, Joshua and Michael, will be assigned to Kima International School of Theology (KIST) to minister in teaching and the administration of the extension program. The Baylors anticipate a departure in fall 2009.
In 1999, God called the Baylors into full-time ministry without revealing the exact shape this would take. Dave began master's studies in theology while Bonnie continued to work in hospitality and grief support ministries. During a meeting with longtime missionaries Stanley and Marion Hoffman, Dave and Bonnie were challenged with the need for leadership training and development in Africa. After much prayer, it became clear that God was calling them to help equip his church in Africa. Dave completed his theological studies at Anderson University School of Theology and graduated in May 2008.
The church in East Africa is very strong and growing, but there is a need and a desire for additional leadership development and training. KIST, in Kima, Kenya, is one avenue for this training. Over the last ten years, more than two hundred students have been equipped and sent out into the ministry through KIST. However, not everyone can attend the standard residential program due to the cost and family obligations. Therefore, KIST has initiated an extension training program that will take the classes to church leaders in their home areas. This program uses an intensive format, allowing local leaders to get much of the same training available to residential students. Classes are currently being conducted in Uganda and Kenya; KIST plans to expand the program into Tanzania and Zambia.
