India Violence: An Update from Orissa
Church of God Ministries, Global Missions, CBH: Christians Broadcasting Hope
|
|
Today, we received an update by e-mail on the situation in Orissa, India, from our good friend and colleague, Asim Das. Asim ministers in Orrisa, one of the most religiously radicalized states of India, where religious persecution and violence aimed at the Christian community has exploded in recent weeks. In a previous message, Asim spoke of the persecution sparked by the assassination of a radical Hindu leader. It was assumed by his followers that the Christians were behind his death since he had targeted Christians when he was alive, and so the destruction and killings began. In his latest updated, Asim wrote:
Thank you for praying for us. We need and covet it. I inform you that all our churches in the rural area of one particular district have been demolished along with the houses of the believers. This is the fate of all churches and Christian families in that district and other districts also. People have fled to the forests in the clothes they were wearing. No food is reaching them. Our centre [in the area] has been burnt down with all belongings that were inside. Plans are to demolish the building. We have asked for protection.
One very encouraging thing is when the believers in one of our congregations were asked to renounce Christ, they said they cannot do it. What they have found in Christ is more precious to them. They asked for time to move out and relocate, but would not in any circumstance deny Jesus. We thank God for their testimony.
…Thank you for your prayers and encouragement. By God’s grace no life has been lost from among our people. Others have lost near and dear ones.
Join us in lifting up the persecuted church in Orissa, India, in prayer, for the provision and perseverance of Christians, and for peace to be established in this region. |
