5th Quarter Kicks Off After Game Sept. 12*
Church of God - General

Exeter, CA—Win or lose, starting this Friday Exeter students can party after the game like they’ve never partied before. But parents need not worry.

This party is a positive alternative that is both student and parent approved.

This year, three Friday nights are designated for something called 5th Quarter, where home game fun will go into overtime.

Held at the Church of God of Exeter, 5th Quarter is the place to be for non-stop Friday festivities.

Everything for students is free from tacos, pizza and coffee to the variety of games and activities that make up the rest of the evening.

From 9:30 pm to 12:30 am students can participate in the local version of a major game show, play pool and foosball or hop till they drop in a bungie bounce-house.

Formed by concerned parents, local business owners and the EUHS PASS Club members, the idea of 5th Quarter was handed off to Exeter Church of God Youth Director Michael Guzman who, along with community support, brought it to fruition.

Now in its third year the event is gaining popularity with both students and parents. As part of this year’s planning process Guzman said more and more students provided input and are getting involved.

“Student’s are saying that it gives them a positive ‘party’ atmosphere,” said Guzman. “They really enjoy the fact that the adults participate and talk with them. They feel like the adults really care.”

Funds donated from Kiwanis Spirit of the Holidays Christmas tree auction has already helped this year’s 5th Quarter off to a good start. In addition to the usual fun fare, students will be treated to live entertainment from the band 'A Moment’s Notice’ to a duct tape comedy team who specializes in sticky situations.

This year’s events each have their own unique theme including: Sept. 12 is Hippie night, Thursday Oct. 30 is Carnival night and Nov. 7 is Western night.

Each 5th Quarter will have different activities and games. There will be carnival games at of course, Carnival Night and a mechanical bull on Western night.

Students can also enter in one of the many raffles that take place at each 5th Quarter including ones for gift certificates to various local destinations or for items like a video camera or PSP.

This year, the grand prize will help two students dress their best for formal and get into the dance for free.

With so many sweet activities, prizes and food it’s no wonder that so many Exeter students are traveling from stadium to steeple. But 5th Quarter folks are still looking for sponsors and volunteers.

“Each event costs more than $2000,” said Guzman. “And we can always use volunteers to help keep the event rolling. We had over 800 students come last year and we’re expecting 1,000 this year.”
