Extending a warm welcome to international guests

By Kathi Sellers

Global Missions invites you to help give a warm and gracious welcome to international guests at the North American Convention. Take time to seek out and meet our Church of God friends from around the world. A large delegation from Brazil includes the new CBH Portuguese speaker, Isai Hort. Central American guests Donnie Allen of Honduras and Isaí Calderón, Jr., both speak fluent English. Invite them to dinner and be fascinated by what God is doing in their respective countries. Narciso Zamora, a national missionary who helped plant the church in Ecuador and Chile, is another guest. He has just written a book about his experiences and the lessons learned. You can get a signed copy.

Youth-Ins feature late-night fun and worship

By Kevin Stiffler

As consistent as good music, good preaching, and good fellowship during North American Convention are the Youth-Ins, the late-night options for teenage convention-goers. This year’s Youth-In lineup includes the following events:

  • Saturday, June 21: Games and “Gutter Sundaes”—9:30 to 11:00 pm, Church of God Ministries Assembly Room, $2.00. Hang out and meet other students at convention.
  • Sunday, June 22: Matt Lloyd Concert—9:30 to 11:00 pm, Byrum Hall, $5.00. This band seeks to “put a smile on your face, a chill up your spine, (and) a tug on your heart.”

Welcome Home!

An essay by Suzanne Haley

“How good and pleasant it is
when brothers live together in unity!”
—Psalm 133:1 niv

Suzanne HaleyAs we embark upon this year’s North American Convention, I have been praying for God to visit us in that way that has profoundly transformed my life: I’ve been healed to be an instrument of healing. While unity expressed in community is both magnetic and compelling, it’s risky business because eventually it demands of us both humility and forgiveness.

Over twenty years ago, my husband and I were invited by friends to visit Long Reach Church of God in Columbia, Maryland. We were heartily welcomed, immersed into community, equipped to serve, and called into leadership. After a few years, I spontaneously ventured out to experience a day of the National Association camp meeting, which is held in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, every year. Without a registration or a reservation, I pressed my way to “Zion’s Hill,” arriving just in time for the evening service, where I sat in awe as the saints gathered to worship that night.

Peace Fellowship sponsors events and conferences

By Kay Shively

Peace Fellowship logo Officially founded in 1966, the Church of God Peace Fellowship is deeply rooted in the history of the Church of God and the peace efforts of numerous Church of God leaders. Each year, the Peace Fellowship sponsors conferences and events as part of the North American Convention. The Peace Fellowship’s 2008 conferences center around the theme of “Living Unity, Making Peace,” based on Ephesians 4:3, “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (niv). Church of God Ministries, Church of God - General
By Scott Miley

ANDERSON — Camp meetings may not be unique to the Church of God faith.

But they defined the reformation movement as it moved to Anderson in the late 1800s.

“Camp meetings were a natural way of getting people together in worship and singing,” said Merle D. Strege, historian for the Church of God.

C.T.I. Begins Training the Class of 2008
Church of God Ministries, Church of God - General

Those who have a coach to walk alongside them have a much higher success rate at whatever they do than those who go it alone. It is with this thought in mind that twenty men and women from across the United States recently gathered in Orlando to participate in the most recent class of the Church of God Coaches Training Initiative. C.T.I. was started in 2005 to meet the growing need for well-trained coaches to walk alongside and provide support to local congregations. In terms of attendance, 80 percent of all Church of God congregations have either plateaued or are in decline, so this type of initiative is needed now more than ever. Rev. Mike Harmon, from Bay City, Michigan, shared, “I believe, wholeheartedly, that this is the direction that the Church of God needs to go. I see a huge impact on the horizon if we are successful in developing and accomplishing effective coaching relationships. In a few years, we will see a great impact in our recline/decline church factor.”
