The Witness of Unity

SOT conference focuses on global partnerships
By Richard Willowby
“Does unity have a cost?” asked conference attendee Nathan Wiebe. The conversation prompted by Wiebe’s question ended with a consensus suggesting that indeed achieving unity exacts a price—even sacrifice.
David Neidert, director of Anderson University School of Theology’s Center for Christian Leadership, hosted the conference, titled “Global Faith Partners: a Conversation about Unity." Those attending discussed John 17, a passage central to Church of God theological thinking for nearly a century and a quarter. Jesus’ prayer pleads for the unity of his followers and “those who will believe in me through their word” (v. 20).

Conference focuses on the value of ministry and mission trips
By Ed Hyatt
The conference on Eye on the World, Church of God Ministries mission and ministry team emphasis, began in a surprising fashion. Ruben Schwieger, co-presenter with Ed Hyatt, gave those attending a quiz. The quiz focused, as one might expect, on various aspects of mission and ministry trips. The thirty plus attendees were not intimidated; most have had extensive experience crossing the globe sharing Christ. Many of those in attendance have been on more than fifty mission and ministry trips.

Bridging the intergenerational gap in women’s ministry
By Courtney Porter
Often I have the privilege of answering the phones for the national offices of Women of the Church of God. One question that seems to be on the hearts of the women across the country is, How do we get younger women involved with Women of the Church of God? That is a great question, yet the answer is not as easy as we would like it to be.

Providing a forum for laughter and stories, hope and encouragement
By Josh Weiger
Preacher’s kids and missionary’s kids. The mere mention of those words often invokes stereotypes, with stigmas soon to follow. In a world where full-time ministry has proven time and time again to be difficult and draining on the family, the PK/MK Retreat brings together those most affected—the kids!

Growing in maturity to unity in Christ
By Susan Kane
The spirit of unity was apparent Tuesday night as the Kid’s Place choir led worship, Alejandro de Fransisco shared his heart through song, and Richard Mansfield presided over the 2008 Partnership with Possibilities Offering. The annual offering helps to promote leadership development and support church multiplication.
The evening message was brought by Rev. Rod Stafford, senior pastor at Fairfax Community Church in Fairfax, Virginia. Using Ephesians 4:13, Stafford shared that we are to press on in our faith until we are mature and have “attained the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”

Concilio Sponsors Spanish-Language Services
Church of God Ministries, Church of God - General
|
By Kathi Sellers
The Concilio Hispano de la Iglesia de Dios hosted Spanish-language worship services at the 2008 North American Convention. Worship was lively, with a Latin flair, led by De Jesus Butto, a group of enthusiastic young people playing guitars, drums, and keyboards. They received their musical training from Marco Witt’s Instituto Canzión. In Latin terms, that is the best Christian music training available. Marcos Witt is the premier contemporary music leader, the Chris Tomlin of Latin America.

Kid's Place Celebrates 25 Years
Church of God Ministries, Church of God - General
|
By Kathleen D. Buehler
For the past twenty-five years, Kid’s Place has been helping children experience other cultures and come to realize that God is at work all over the world. The children have been able to meet missionaries and learn about people from such places as Egypt, Lebanon, Brazil, India, Russia, Africa, Japan, the Caribbean, and others.
This year, the children at Kid’s Place are visiting China. After the children arrive each morning at Hartung Hall, they meet with their family groups (carrying family names such as Shu, Guah, and Ma) and move to Byrum for a large group worship time led by Duane Parker of Mississippi and Mark Hawkins of Michigan and their guitars.

Youth Head to Texas for IYC
Church of God Ministries, Church of God - General
|
By Kevin Stiffler
From all across North America and around the world, thousands of teenagers and youth leaders will converge on San Antonio, Texas, for the 46th International Youth Convention of the Church of God, July 14–17, 2008. The goal of IYC is to create moments for life change, raising up a new generation of Christ-centered leaders.
The International Youth Convention of the Church of God began in 1924 as a simple “youth day” during the annual Anderson camp meeting. In 1930, the first separate youth convention was held. Since that time, the biennial gathering has been held in various cities across the United States, as well as in three provinces in Canada.
